1 Dead in Madera County Auto Accident on Highway 99 and Avenue 18 1/2
MADERA COUNTY, CA (April 11, 2022) – Sunday morning, a man died in a wrong-way crash on Highway 99 and Avenue 18 1/2.
The crash occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on southbound Highway 99 north of Avenue 18 1/2.
According to reports, a wrong-way driver in a white GMC pickup headed north in the southbound lanes. Then, the pickup collided head-on with a gray SUV as it traveled south on Highway 99.
“Immediately we received updates from the public that one of the vehicles had caught fire. That happened to be the white pickup that was traveling in the wrong direction. Once our partners with CAL FIRE showed up and extinguished the fire, we did locate a victim inside the vehicle,” CHP Sgt. Taka Huira revealed.
At this time, the authorities haven’t identified the man. Also, officers confirmed that four SUV occupants suffered moderate to major injuries. Thus, responders took them to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Officials continue to investigate whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
