Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Central Avenue in Albuquerque

Albuquerque, NM (October 16, 2024) – A man died in a crash on Central Avenue and San Mateo Boulevard.

The Albuquerque Police Department’s fatal traffic team investigated a crash that occurred around 12:50 AM on Tuesday, October 15, involving a vehicle and a pedestrian near Central Ave. and San Mateo Blvd.

Preliminary reports indicate that a man in a wheelchair was crossing Central in the middle of the road, moving from north to south. At the same time, a green Lexus sedan was driving east on Central, just past San Mateo, in the second lane. 

The pedestrian sustained severe injuries and died at the scene.

According to information from the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), the driver stated that he was heading south on San Mateo and made a left turn onto Central. 

While driving east, he didn’t notice the man in the wheelchair until he was about 10 feet away. The driver attempted to swerve but was unable to avoid the collision. 

The pedestrian, who did not have any identification, remains unidentified.

Police do not believe alcohol or speeding contributed to the crash, with the primary cause appearing to be pedestrian error. 

However, the investigation remains ongoing.
