Driver Hit and Killed by Big Rig after Exiting His Vehicle on Highway 99 in Salida
SALIDA, CA (February 14, 2020) – A man who got out of his vehicle was fatally struck by a big rig Friday morning in Salida.
The fatal incident happened just before 9:00 a.m. on northbound Highway 99, just south of Hammett Road.
Investigators said the man was sitting in his Honda van parked along the east shoulder of the highway. The big rig, driven by 41-year-old Jatinder Singh of Ferndale, Washington, was traveling in the northbound slow lane approaching the man.
For unknown reasons, the man exited his vehicle and entered the traffic lanes. The big rig then struck him and came to rest slightly further up the road along the east shoulder.
Emergency responders pronounced the man dead at the scene. The victim was only described as a 42-year-old Modesto resident.
Singh remained on scene and cooperated with authorities.
Drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to have contributed the crash, which remains under investigation.
We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim during this time of grief.
