Sigalert Issued Following Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision on Interstate 80
Berkeley, CA (August 21, 2020) – A male driver died in a multi-car collision on Interstate 80 leading to a Sig-alert on Wednesday afternoon.
The fatal crash happened on August 19 on Interstate 80 near the Gilman Street on-ramp, west of Buchanan Street. According to CHP Officer Sean Layton, they arrived at the scene just after 3 p.m. and found the vehicle involved.
The vehicle was a green Toyota Tercel and inside, was an injured male driver. Medical personnel performed life-saving measures however, the man later died.
His identity has not been released.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the Toyota was traveling at a high rate of speed. Officers found out that it changed lanes before crashing into a black Lexus IS 350. Due to the impact of the crash, the Toyota lost control and hit the center divide before leaning into a blue Ford Ranger sport-utility vehicle.
There was no other report of injuries.
The crash prompted the closure of numbers 1-4 lanes therefore, officers issued a Sig-alert at 3:23 p.m. Moreover, officers lifted the alert by 4:30 p.m. and lanes have since reopened.
The investigators believed that alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the crash.
