Driver Killed, Passenger Injured after San Rafael Rollover Crash on Highway 101
SAN RAFAEL, CA (July 22, 2019) — A driver died and his passenger suffered injuries in a rollover crash on Highway 101 on Sunday, July 21.
The male driver and female passenger were heading north in a Ford Expedition on Highway 101 near Lucas Valley Road around 3:40 a.m. They drifted to the right, then left the highway and veered up an embankment.
The vehicle knocked over a light pole on the right shoulder before it stopped on its side in the slow lane. When officers arrived, they discovered the Expedition lying on the driver’s side, blocking traffic.
First responders transported the female passenger to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The male driver died at the scene.
The driver and the passenger did not appear that they wore their seatbelt. Both were thrown off the vehicle during the accident.
It is not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, CHP stated.
The surrounding area was closed off for a brief time while crews worked to clear the wreckage. However, the roadway has since reopened.
CHP had not released the identities of the victims Sunday afternoon pending notification of their families.
