71-Year-Old Woman Fatally Struck by Bus near Long Beach Courthouse
LONG BEACH, CA (February 8, 2020) – A woman was struck and killed by a chartered bus Saturday morning near the Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse in Long Beach.
The crash happened around 11:15 a.m., in the area of Third Street and Magnolia Avenue.
According to police, the woman was crossing Third Street, southbound on the west side of Magnolia Avenue. She waited at the signal for the light to change and began to cross once the light turned green.
While crossing in the marked crosswalk, a 2002 Bluebird bus struck her.
Officers arrived and found the woman trapped under the yellow charter bus. Long Beach paramedics rendered aid to the woman, but she died at the scene.
Authorities identified the victim as 71-year-old Mamlekat Joseph of Long Beach.
The bus driver, a 25-year-old Van Nuys man, remained on scene and was later released.
There were no passengers aboard the bus when the crash happened.
Authorities did not rule out intoxication and distracted driving as factors in the crash. The driver also had a valid commercial driver’s license and proof of insurance.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
