Water Truck Overturns Down a Cliff on Deer Creek Road in Malibu Killing the Driver
MALIBU, CA (May 15, 2019) – A 68-year-old Twin Peaks man was killed after the water truck he was driving overturned down a cliff Wednesday morning in Malibu, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported a little after 9:00 a.m. about a mile up Deer Creek Road, just East of Highway 1, also known as Pacific Coast Highway.
According to the report, the man was driving a 2012 Western water truck up a steep incline north on Deer Creek Road. The truck was carrying 20,000 gallons of water and the man pulled it onto the right shoulder to let vehicles pass.
For unknown reasons, the man lost control and the vehicle rolled over backwards off Deer Creek Road down the cliff. It came to a stop more than 2,000 feet off the roadway and landed on its side. It flipped multiple times on the way down.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and could spot the water truck from the roadway. A firefighter went down and found the truck driver had died from his injuries.
No one else was in the truck at the time of the crash, CHP officials said.
The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office did not release the man’s identity pending family notification.
The crash is still under investigation. Authorities urged anyone who witnessed the crash to call CHP at 805-662-2640.
