1 Hurt in Santa Cruz County Pedestrian Crash on Soquel Drive and North Rodeo Gulch Road
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA (December 23, 2020) – Saturday evening, a male pedestrian suffered injuries in an accident on Soquel Drive and North Rodeo Gulch Road.
The incident occurred at 5:40 p.m. on Soquel Drive and North Rodeo Gulch Road. According to reports, a 27-year-old man standing on the sidewalk on the northeast corner started walking south across Soquel Drive using a crosswalk.
Meanwhile, a 2003 Honda Accord driving west on Soquel Drive failed to stop and hit the pedestrian. Thus the pedestrian went up onto the hood of the vehicle as the driver tried to stop and drove into the intersection.
Then, the front, right side of the vehicle struck a metal guardrail on the northwest corner of the intersection. The impact threw the pedestrian from the hood onto a grassy area nearby.
Afterward, medical responders transported the pedestrian to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Moreover, the Honda driver was uninjured.
At this time, the CHP officials do not believe that alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
Pedestrians and Accidents
Pedestrians have the right of way at any crosswalk or intersection. Therefore, it’s a driver’s responsibility to yield and be prepared to stop.
While car accidents are far more common, there is still reason to be wary when traveling on foot.
Furthermore, common locations for these pedestrian accidents include street corners and intersections.
“Pedestrian accidents do not occur as much as motor vehicle accidents. Nevertheless, they tend to include more serious injuries,” says Tyler Toomey, of Sweet Lawyers.
