SUV Catches Fire on 580 Freeway in Oakland Killing One and Leaving Another in Critical Condition
OAKLAND, CA (February 2, 2020) – A woman was killed in a fiery rollover crash Sunday afternoon in East Oakland.
The crash happened around 4:42 p.m. on 580 Freeway near 35th Avenue.
CHP officials said a black SUV was traveling westbound on the freeway when it hit the right shoulder. It then overturned and burst into flames.
As a result, a female occupant in the car died at the scene. The coroner’s office identified her Monday as Ma Lu Thu, 47, of Santa Clara.
Another person in the car was badly injured. Paramedics rushed that person to a hospital in critical condition.
Authorities have not said who was driving the vehicle and if the other occupant was a man or woman.
The crash raised a SigAlert, blocking freeway lanes for more than two hours. All lanes were reopened just before 7:20 p.m.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Anyone with information about the crash is urged to call CHP’s Oakland office at 510-457-2875.
