70-Year-Old Bellingham Man Hospitalized after Pedestrian Crash near Cagey Road
BELLINGHAM, WA (September 3, 2018) – An elderly man was injured Monday morning following a pedestrian accident near Cagey Road. The victim was later identified as 70-year-old Lyle Vanderyacht of Bellingham.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the incident took place at about 8:50 AM in the 3100 block of Sunset Way. A 2009 SCC garbage truck, driven by 56-year-old Stevica Devic, was backing up to get a missed garbage can when it struck the victim.
Vanderyacht sustained unspecified injuries, and he was transported to the PeaceHealth Saint Joseph Medical Center. Meanwhile, Devic remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities during their investigation. No other injuries were reported by the authorities.
The preliminary investigation suggests that Devic activated the audible back-up tones, but Vanderyacht continued walking. It was also confirmed that no charges will be filed against the truck driver. Additional information has not been provided to the public at this time.
