Truck Driver and Passenger Fatally Injured in Rear-End Crash near West Shields Avenue
MERCED COUNTY, CA (July 17, 2018) – Two people were killed Tuesday morning after their truck collided with another truck on Interstate 5.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident took place shortly after 5:00 AM near West Shields Avenue. A 2014 Peterbilt, driven by 25-year-old Arvin resident Luis Mendez Jr, failed to notice that the traffic ahead had slowed.
Mendez’s truck rear-ended a 1998 Freightliner, which was ultimately forced into a 2011 International truck. The impact fatally injured Mendez and his unidentified female passenger, and they were both pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. There were no other injuries reported by the authorities.
An investigation is ongoing to determine what might have caused Mendez to collide with the stopped big rigs. No additional information has been disclosed to the public at this time.
