Luis Esquivel of Bakersfield Arrested in California Avenue Fatal Collision [Bakersfield, CA]

Bakersfield, CA (August 18, 2023) – On Thursday night, Luis Esquivel, 48, of Bakersfield, was arrested in a California Avenue DUI collision killing a male passenger.

Investigating officers said that a sedan was northbound on Chester Avenue while a pickup driven by Luis Esquivel was westbound on California Avenue.

The two vehicles collided at the intersection.

Responding officers located the driver and passenger of the sedan suffering from major injuries. They were both taken to a hospital where the passenger later died. The woman who was driving the sedan remains in critical condition.

Luis Esquivel did not sustain injuries and remained at the scene. He was later taken to Kern Medical for further examination.

Later on, BPD officers determined that Esquivel was driving under the influence of alcohol. They arrested him for DUI, murder, driving with a suspended license, and traffic violations. He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 22
