Man in Wheelchair Critically Injured in Hit-and-Run Crash at 1st and Townsend Streets
SANTA ANA, CA (June 28, 2019) – The suspected driver in a hit-and-run crash that left a man in a wheelchair critically injured has been arrested Sunday, authorities said.
The crash happened Friday around 10:37 p.m., near the intersection of 1st and Townsend streets.
According to police, a man in a wheelchair crossed First Street going south, within a marked crosswalk. There, an eastbound car struck him.
The impact sent the man down in the roadway. Responding officers found him to have a faint pulse and shallow breathing.
Officers began performing CPR before paramedics arrived and took him to a nearby hospital in an extremely critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and continued eastbound along First Street. The vehicle was later described a dark-colored Toyota Camry with significant damage to its front end.
A tip about a car in a Santa Ana neighborhood matching that description was reported to police. Detectives believe the vehicle was the same one involved in the hit-and-run.
Police later arrested the responsible driver, 48-year-old Lucio Luna, and booked him into Orange County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run DUI.
