LODI, CA – Bicyclist Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on West Lane

Bicyclist Fatally Injured after being Struck by SUV on West Lane near Armstrong Road

 
LODI, CA (April 9, 2018) – A bicyclist was fatally injured in a wrong-way crash that took place on West Lane after weaving in and out of traffic, late Monday afternoon.
 
California Highway Patrol reports stated that the unidentified bicycle rider was struck by an SUV around 4:30 PM. The victim was riding his bike the wrong way, going north in the southbound West Lane center median near Armstrong Road.
 
A red Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling southbound in the fast lane, when the bicyclist entered into the fast lane and into the path of the Tahoe. The driver of the Tahoe attempted to turn right to try and avoid colliding with the bicyclist, but the bicyclist continued to turn into the SUV’s path, according to CHP. The Tahoe ultimately struck the bicyclist, ejecting the rider from the bike and onto the road.
 
The bicyclist suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. His identity has not yet been released to the public, pending notification of next of kin.
 
Police confirmed that the Tahoe driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident. It is unclear whether or not the bicyclist was under the influence or not; a toxicology report is pending at this time. CHP received several 911 calls reporting a bicyclist who was riding in and out of traffic/ had stopped within the traffic lanes of West Lane. Officers were responding to those reports when the fatal collision occurred.
