Maintain a safe speed when driving in an area populated by pedestrians. Common areas that require caution include downtown, residential areas, parking lots, busy intersections, sidewalks near major streets, and parking garages. Keep your eyes on the road and be prepared to brake. A best practice is to assume that the pedestrian does not see you. This will put you on guard and keep your focus sharp.
