17-Year-Old Eastlake High School Graduate Fatally Struck by Vehicle While Jogging near Scobee Park

 
CHULA VISTA, CA (July 8, 2018) – A recent graduate of Eastlake High School was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while jogging near Scobee Park.
 
17-year-old Leilani Magno was jogging on the 900 block of Lane Avenue around 8:15 PM when she was struck by a white Chevy Silverado.
 
The driver, 47-year-old George Joseph Espinosa of Chula Vista, was traveling south on Lane Avenue when his Chevy lost control, jumped the sidewalk, and hit Magno from behind before fleeing the scene. Magno was rushed to Mercy Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.

At 3:35 PM Monday Espinosa turned himself in at the Chula Vista Police Department and was taken into custody. He also directed investigators to the location of his vehicle, which matched the description previously provided. The driver was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in death or injury and is being held at the San Diego County Central Detention Facility on $50,000 bail.
