70-Year-Old Edmonds Man Missing after Small Plane Crash in Bainbridge Island’s Eagle Harbor
BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WA (May 27, 2018) – A woman was rescued early Sunday evening, while a man remains missing after a small plane crashed in Bainbridge Island’s Eagle Harbor. Officials later identified the missing man as 70-year-old Lee Elliott, a carpenter from Edmonds, and the rescued woman as Joan Burns. Friends and family confirmed that the two were partners.
According to a report by the Coast Guard, the crash took place shortly after 5:30 PM near Eagle Harbor. Elliott and Burns were inside a two-seater 1974 Cessna 150 when it plunged into the 100-foot-deep water and sank down within seconds, as per witness statements.
Burns was spotted by a Good Samaritan who pulled her out of the water. She was flown to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center, where she was confirmed to be in critical condition. The Coast Guard, with the help of Seattle Harbor Patrol, North Kitsap Fire and Rescue, Bainbridge Police Department and about 20 Good Samaritan vessel crews, attempted to find Elliott and the missing aircraft. However, the search and rescue operations were called off Monday afternoon at approximately 2 PM.
The National Transportation Board announced Sunday that they will be handling the investigation for this case.
