25-Year-Old Yelm Woman Fatally Injured in Multi-Vehicle Collision near West Meeker Street
KENT, WA (August 3, 2018) – A wrong-way driver was killed early Friday morning, following a multi-vehicle crash near West Meeker Street.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the deadly collision happened at about 2:49 AM. A 2014 Chevy Impala, driven by 25-year-old Layla Bader of Yelm, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of State Route 516 when it struck a 2008 Chevrolet C4500 pickup truck.
The impact caused the driver of the pickup to slam into the center median, while the Chevy lost control and collided with a 2013 Toyota Highlander driven by a 27-year-old Tacoma woman. Debris from the crash damaged a fourth vehicle, a 2018 Hyundai Kona, driven by a 20-year-old Puyallup man.
Bader sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead by emergency crews. Investigators believe that she was under the influence of alcohol when the collision happened. It was also noted that she was not secured in a seat belt. Meanwhile, the three drivers involved in the incident were not seriously hurt.
Authorities later determined that the driver of the pickup truck, a 54-year-old Lake Tapps man, was also impaired at the time of the crash. He was later arrested on suspicion of DUI, but the State Patrol clarified that he did not cause the incident.
No further details have been provided to the public at this time.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Layla Bader. We wish them strength and comfort during this trying time. May she rest in peace.
