Latoya Phillips Detained, Passenger Dies on His Birthday in East Foothills DUI Crash
EAST FOOTHILLS, CA (July 4, 2019) – Police arrested a woman following a fatal DUI crash late Thursday evening on Highway 130 in East Foothills.
The crash happened around 11:46 p.m. in the 15600 block of Mt. Hamilton Road, about 850 feet East of Alum Rock Road.
A 36-year-old Latoya Phillips of Campbell and her passenger had left a restaurant and headed down Mt. Hamilton Road. For unknown reasons, their 2018 Range Rover went off the roadway and plunged about 150 feet down embankment.
Arriving units were able to see the SUV’s taillights down the embankment.
The front-seat passenger, a 52-year-old man, whose birthday was July 4, died at the scene. His name has not yet been released.
Officers determined that Phillips was under the influence of alcohol and after performing a series of tests. Authorities arrested her on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Police booked Phillips into the Santa Clara County Jail after being medically cleared.
