Larry Vanderhoofven Killed in Tragic Crash on Highway 1 [Lompoc, CA]

3 People Injured After Crash 2-Vehicle on Highway 1 in Lompoc

Lompoc, CA (February 21, 2024) – On Wednesday morning, Larry Vanderhoofven, 85, from Lompoc died in a crash on Highway 1.

At 8:49 a.m., emergency personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol (CHP), and American Medical Response rushed to Highway 1 and Santa Lucia Canyon Road in response to the crash.

Officials pronounced Larry Vanderhoofven, 85, from Lompoc, dead at the scene.

Patsy Vanderhoofven, 84, also from Lompoc, a passenger, suffered major injuries and was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center, according to an officer.

Ulises Sanchez, 33, and Severiano Avila, 21, residents of Santa Maria in the second vehicle, sustained minor injuries and received treatment at a local hospital. 

Larry Vanderhoofven, who drove a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze eastbound from Santa Lucia Canyon Road and attempted a left turn onto Highway 1, was involved in a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix collision. Sanchez, the driver of the Pontiac, was heading southbound on Highway 1 when their vehicles collided in the fast lane. 

The crash led to traffic disruptions on Highway 1 as crews worked on the scene to investigate and clear the wreckage.

 CHP officers from the Buellton area, who are investigating the crash, stated that alcohol and drugs did not seem to be contributing factors. 

Further details were not immediately available. Further investigation is ongoing.
