SUV and Semi-Trailer Accident Leaves Man Critically Injured on Panama and Enos Lanes
BAKERSFIELD, CA (January 12, 2018) – A 35-year-ol man from Taft, Lance Stephens, was critically injured in an accident with a semi on Friday morning around 4 AM, just south of Bakersfield.
Zachary Thiel of Nebraska, 25, was driving a flatbed semi-trailer northbound on Highway 43, when he missed an exit. He went in reverse onto Panama Lane, and was then struck by Stephens in a red SUV, also going northbound.
Stephens saw the truck and veered right to avoid a collision, but ended up crashing into the left rear of the semi. The front of his vehicle was stuck in the back of the trailer. Firefighters had to rescue him from his car.
First responders were still on the scene, even hours after the crash. Roads remained closed while Stephens was removed from the car and transported to Kern Medical with critical injuries, and debris was cleared from the road. Officials reopened the roads around 8 AM that same morning.
Authorities are still unsure whether speed or weather played a role in this accident.
When driving in foggy conditions, it is important to stay alert and turn on your fog lights for better visual clarity of the road. Don’t speed or drive recklessly, and pull over if weather conditions get too hazardous to drive safely.
