LANCASTER, CA – 1 Dead and 2 Injured in Suspected DUI Crash on Avenue F

Driver Killed and Deputy Injured in Head-On Crash near Highway 14

 
LANCASTER, CA (March 11, 2018) – One person died and a Deputy was hospitalized after a suspected DUI crash on Avenue F on Sunday morning around 1:40 AM.
 
The incident began when two CHP officers approached two vehicles that were stopped on Highway 14 at the West Avenue F off-ramp. As they were getting near the vehicles, the driver of the 1998 silver Volvo sped away and made a turn eastbound on Avenue F. As the two officers re-entered the patrol vehicle, the other driver informed them that he was rear-ended by the Volvo.
 
The California Highway Patrol officers drove after the Volvo and made an attempt to pull it over. The Volvo suddenly veered to the left and crashed head-on into an LASD marked vehicle driving westbound on F at the time. The LASD Deputy in the car was responding to a routine call for service, unrelated to the collision, on the ramp at the time. The LASD vehicle had its lights and siren off as it was unaware of the CHP incident that just happened.
 
Pinned in her car, the Deputy had to be pulled out of the wreckage by emergency officials. She sustained injuries to her left side and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. It is believed she may have suffered a broken leg. She was reported to be in stable condition by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
 
The driver of the Volvo was pronounced dead at the scene. Reportedly, a 30-year-old male passenger, out of California City, was sent to a local hospital with moderate injuries.
 
Investigators are looking into whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the fatal crash, and CHP officers confirmed that alcohol was detected on the passenger of the sedan. However, it was not yet immediately known if the driver also under the influence.
 
A SigAlert was implemented for Avenue F between Highway 14 and Sierra Highway.
