Lam Nguyen Fatally Hurt in San Clemente Motorcycle Accident
SAN CLEMENTE, CA (April 15, 2019) – A man sustained fatal injuries following a motorcycle crash in a San Clemente highway on Sunday, April 7.
Officials identified the victim as 21-year-old Lam Nguyen, of Orange.
The fatal accident occurred on Ortega Highway, the portion of Highway 74 in the hills above San Clemente.
The California Highway Patrol said that the collision happened around 3:10 p.m. when Nguyen rode his Kawasaki westbound through a series of tight curves near Upper San Juan Campground.
As Nguyen negotiated a turn, he tried to pass a Dodge Durango, which moves in the same direction as him, the CHP. He then steered to the right of the Dodge. After that, he accelerated and then lost control as he swerved into an asphalt turn-out.
Officials said that Nguyen struck a boulder in a dirt embankment. The impact caused him to be ejected from his motorcycle onto the shoulder.
Nguyen, who was wearing a helmet, died at the site of the incident, according to the CHP. Officials closed the westbound lane for an hour.
