63-year-old Woman Died in a Rollover Crash on Highway 125 and 8 Freeway

LA MESA, CA (February 7, 2018) – A 63-year-old woman of National City woman died and her two passengers were injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash on a freeway transition ramp on Wednesday.

The crash happened at around 11:15 PM on the looping connector ramp from northbound Highway 125 to westbound 8 Freeway, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow.

Garrow stated that for reasons unknown, the driver of the 2007 Dodge Caliber entered the transition road at an unsafe speed and struck a concrete retaining wall, while trying to negotiate the sudden curve. The initial crash forced the vehicle to rollover until it came to a full stop. The driver of the Dodge sustained blunt force trauma and died at the scene. Authorities did not immediately release her name.

Witnesses kicked out the windshield of the overturned car to rescue a front-seat passenger. The CHP identified the passenger as a 39-year-old man of Lemon Grove. There was also information revealed that firefighters had to rescue the back-seat passenger, a 54-year-old from San Diego man, who was trapped in the wreckage. Both passengers sustained moderate to major injuries and were brought to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego.

All three occupants of the car were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, and investigators do not believe that drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.

Authorities closed off the connector ramp for more than five hours and reopened it at around about 4:45 AM the next day.
