HEMET, CA (May 3, 2019) – Kyle Towai and Joshua Mateo Serquina died in a DUI car crash on West Florida Avenue near Warren Road Wednesday night.
Faalele Rosemarie Patea, 25, is accused of driving while drunk and high at speeds in excess of 100 mph in Hemet, officials said. She was arrested at the scene and has been charged with two counts of murder.
The crash happened just after 9:00 p.m. Wednesday on Florida Avenue near Warren Road in Hemet. Witnesses said a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta was being driven east on Florida and rear-ended a Honda Civic that was slowing for a red light, the release said. A third vehicle was involved in the collision as well.
The occupants of the Honda were taken to a hospital. Serquina, 22, of Beaumont died at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, the coroner said.
Towai, 22, of Beaumont died at 1:12 a.m. Friday, May 3, the Riverside County Coroner’s Office said. Towai’s Facebook profile indicated that he was a service clerk at Walgreen’s and studied at Mt. San Jacinto College and Beaumont High.
Patea is due to enter a plea May 21 in Superior Court in Banning. She is being held at Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside without bail.
A GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the victims’ families says the victims were best friends who were traveling home from school when they were killed.
