Street Sweeper Fatally Struck Kori Powers in Valencia
VALENCIA, CA (May 21, 2019) – A street sweeper in Valencia fatally struck a female bicyclist Sunday just after midnight. The fatal collision happened on Rye Canyon Road and Beale Court. This is according to Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
The street sweeper struck 22-year-old and Castaic resident Kori Powers from behind. Emergency responders transported the victim to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, the driver of the street sweeper cooperated with the sheriff’s officials. Moreover, they ruled out alcohol and drugs as factors in the fatal accident.
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriffs stated that Powers was wearing all dark clothing. Additionally, she didn’t have any lights on her bike. The Sheriff’s officials encourage bicyclists to install lights on their bikes and wear reflective clothing if they’re riding at night. Sergeant Scott Shoemaker with the SCV Sheriff’s Station Traffic Office added that bicyclists should try to find a route that is on well-lit streets.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the loved ones of Kori Powers.
