1 Dead in El Cajon Bicycle Accident on Dehesa Road
EL CAJON, CA (January 22, 2020) – A 56-year-old man died in a hit-and-run bicycle accident on Dehesa Road on January 20.
Authorities arrested 56-year-old Craig Wendell Nelson on suspicion of escaping after hitting and killing a bicyclist.
According to reports, Nelson headed east on Dehesa Road near Singing Hills Golf Course when his 1993 Mitsubishi Mirage steered into a bike lane east of Willow Glen Drive and struck Kevin Wilson of La Mesa from behind around 10:45 a.m.
Medical responders transported Kevin Wilson to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, where he died.
After the crash, Nelson continued heading east and south before pulling over on Sloane Canyon Road and escaping on foot, CHP public-affairs Officer Travis Garrow revealed.
The officers then located the abandoned vehicle. A helicopter search crew then found Nelson in a nearby brushy area. They arrested Nelson and booked him into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run. They set his bail on $50,000 bail.
