Man Fatally Cut by Houseboat Propeller on Shasta Lake
SHASTA COUNTY, CA (September 6, 2019) – A man died in a horrific boating accident Friday afternoon on Shasta Lake, authorities said.
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office says the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. A 23-year-old Kevin Rivera-Cornejo of San Jose was house boating with family and friends.
Deputies say the victim’s father, 49-year-old Hector Rivera, was operating the rented houseboat.
Rivera-Cornejo was standing by himself on the swim deck of the rented houseboat as his father attempted to moor the vessel to the shore, according to a Shasta County Sheriff’s Office news release. As his father was reversing the house boat, Rivera-Cornejo either jumped or fell into the water.
The houseboat propeller cut Rivera-Cornejo’s legs, the release says. His father shut down the engine and rushed to help pull his son from the water.
The family began CPR and called 911, then deputies applied tourniquets to his legs as they took Rivera-Cornejo in a patrol boat to be airlifted to a hospital.
But Rivera-Cornejo succumbed to his injuries.
Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, according to the sheriff’s office.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Kevin Rivera-Cornejo.
