Baby and Mother Dead after Crash with Deputy on 5 Freeway near Charter Way

STOCKTON, CA (December 14, 2019) – A baby and a mother were killed following a rear-end crash Saturday evening in Stockton.

The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. on 5 Freeway near Charter Way.

According to the CHP, a San Joaquin County sheriff’s deputy was driving northbound when for unknown reasons, he rear-ended a Ford sedan. The impact sent the Ford off the freeway and down an embankment.

The deputy extricated the infant from the rear and began CPR. Good Samaritans also rushed to the scene, freed the mother and started performing CPR on her as well.

After medics arrived, the baby boy was flown by helicopter to a children’s hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, the CHP said.

The mother was critically injured and was hospitalized. She also died four days later.

The deputy was also transported to a hospital, was treated and released.

Authorities identified the baby as 1-year-old Kevin Hart and the mother as 23-year-old Kalesha Johnson.

The CHP said alcohol and/or drugs have not played a role in the crash.

An investigation is underway. Authorities asked anyone with information to contact the CHP at (209) 938-4800.
