Elderly Couple Fatally Injured in Head-On Collision near Elbert Road

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (August 7, 2018) – Two people were killed Tuesday afternoon, in a head-on crash on Highway 24. The deceased victims were later identified as 75-year-old Kenneth Wuerfele and 71-year-old Dorothy Wuerfele.

According to Colorado State Patrol reports, El Paso County Deputy Quinlan Linebaugh was driving in a police cruiser westbound on the 24 Highway, around 1:24 PM. He passed the couple’s pickup truck and hit an oncoming dump truck in the eastbound lane. The impact of the collision caused the dump truck to swerve, fish-tail, and hit the Wuerfeles’ vehicle head-on.

The couple was taken to the hospital, where they died due to severe injuries. The driver of the dump truck, 64-year-old James Stutsman, was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. His passenger, 30-year-old Eleazar Velazquez, suffered minor injuries. Linebaugh was also taken to the hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. There is no update of either person’s medical condition.

No additional information has been released on the fatal collision, as it remains under investigation at this time.
