2 Killed and 1 Critically Injured in Plane Accident near Northstar Ski Resort
TRUCKEE, CA (July 17, 2018) – Two men were killed Tuesday morning and another was critically injured after a small plane crash near Highway 267.
As per reports, the deadly collision occurred at about 7:40 AM, near the Northstar ski resort. The pilot, 60-year-old Kenneth Whittall-Scherfee of Carmichael, reported problems with the engine shortly after takeoff. The plane was attempting to return to the Truckee-Tahoe Airport when it crashed.
Whittall-Scherfee sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two male passengers were airlifted by a medical helicopter to a hospital in Reno with critical injuries. Unfortunately, one of them succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital. The identities of the passengers were not immediately available.
The plane, described as a single-engine Navion-B aircraft, was later confirmed to be owned by Whittall-Scherfee. An investigation is being handled by the Federal Aviation Administration’s Pacific Division to determine the cause of the crash.
No additional information has been disclosed to the public at this time, as officials continue to investigate.
