Woman Killed in Collision with Powerboat in Los Angeles Marina
MARINA DEL REY, CA (September 3, 2018) – A kayaker was killed Monday afternoon following a boating accident in Marina Del Rey. The identity of the victim was withheld, pending notification of relatives.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the incident took place at about 1:10 PM on the south side of the jetty. A 50-foot power vessel struck a kayaker near the marina’s entrance. Events leading up to the collision are not yet known.
People in a nearby fishing boat noticed the crash and immediately called for help. They also flagged down the operator of the powerboat. The female kayaker sustained fatal injuries, and she was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. Meanwhile, the boat operator cooperated with investigators. No other injuries were reported by the authorities.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fatal crash and to identify possible contributing factors. Additional details have not been provided to the public at this time.
