Impaired Driver Arrested after Fatal Accident near Road 38
MADERA COUNTY, CA (September 7, 2018) – Two people were killed late Friday morning following a head-on crash near Road 38. The victims were later identified as 51-year-old Karrie Lynn Peterson and 53-year-old Heidi Lynn Vanzeyl, both Oakhurst residents.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place at about 10:41 AM. A westbound 2013 Ford Fusion was traveling at a high rate of speed in the eastbound lane in an attempt to pass a vehicle.
There, the vehicle collided head-on with a 2013 Hyundai Accent, driven by Peterson.
Peterson sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. Vanzeyl, who was a passenger in the Fusion, was also killed in the crash. The driver of the Fusion, identified as 27-year-old Sasha Watson, and two other passengers – 14-year-old Aaliyah Fedak and 16-year-old Jayden Vanzeyl – were transported to the Community Regional Medical Center with major injuries. There is no update on their current medical condition.
Watson was later arrested after authorities determined that she was driving impaired. Additional information will be released following the conclusion of the investigation.
