Mother and Toddler Son Seriously Injured by Two Dogs near 69th Street

LA MESA, CA (June 21, 2018) – A mother and her toddler son were seriously injured Thursday morning after two dogs attacked them on Waite Drive.

At about 8:15 AM, 29-year-old Karina Gonzalez was walking in the 6900 block of Waite Drive with her 8-year-old daughter and two-year-old son, Miguel Angel Gonzalez, who was in a stroller. During their stroll, two female Rottweilers escaped from a nearby backyard and started to attack the mother and her two children.

Nathan Le, the owner of the dogs, immediately ran out of his house to pull the dogs back inside. Multiple Good Samaritans who witnessed the attack rushed to help the injured mother and son.

Karina suffered several bite wounds on her arm, while Miguel sustained major injuries on his scalp and face. The toddler is currently being treated at Rady Children’s Hospital, where it was confirmed that he will need a surgery on his arm. The 8-year-old girl was reportedly unharmed in the incident.

A GoFundMe page was created to support Karina and Miguel’s family with ongoing medical expenses. Click on the link to donate and support the campaign.

The two dogs, named Stella and Cookie, were seized and taken to the El Cajon Animal Shelter. They’ve been declared dangerous and vicious and have been quarantined. An investigation, handled by La Mesa Police, is ongoing at this time. They continue to investigate to determine what might have caused for the violent attack to happen, and if the dogs will be put down. Le will also be given a chance to have an appeal process.

No further details were immediately released to the public at this time.
