23-Year-Old Karen Maldonado Killed in Southern Avenue Collision [Mesa, AZ]

Mesa, AZ (August 24, 2023) – On Wednesday afternoon, 23-year-old Karen Maldonado sustained fatal injuries following a Southern Avenue collision.

Investigators stated that a male driver in Ford pickup truck was traveling too fast on when he hit the curb near Stapley Drive. 

The vehicle sideswiped a silver Chevy and rear-ended Maldonado in a silver Mazda sedan while stopped for a red light at Stapley Drive.

As a result, Maldonado’s vehicle was pushed into the intersection, both her and the Ford pickup truck crashed into other vehicles including a Mesa Public Schools school bus. 

Maldonado succumbed to her injures at the scene. 

Luckily, the boy who was riding the school bus at the time of the collision did not sustain injuries from the accident.

The pickup truck driver was transported to the hospital. Police said the driver wasn’t impaired, though, possible charges are pending.
