Juvenile Killed in DUI Hit-and-Run Crash at Monterey Road and Palm Avenue [SAN JOSE, CA]

Unlicensed Driver Isael Velarde Arrested in Fatal DUI Crash on Monterey Road in San Jose

 
SAN JOSE (June 6, 2019) – A juvenile was killed following a DUI hit-and-run crash early Thursday morning in San Jose, according to police.
 
The crash happened around 3:45 a.m., near the intersection of Monterey Road and Palm Avenue. Dispatchers arrived to the area shortly after.
 
According to the CHP, a gold 1999 Toyota Camry was heading north on Monterey Road when it drifted into the southbound lanes. The car then slammed into a concrete median barrier and spun out.
 
The victim was consequently thrown from the car’s rear passenger seat as a result. Paramedics later pronounced the occupant dead on scene due to the extent of their injuries.
 
Furthermore, the car then ran into a guardrail on the side of the road. A witness stopped and tried to help but the car sped off northbound in the southbound lanes of Monterey Road.
 
California Highway Patrol officers eventually stopped the car about 1.5 miles away at the intersection of Monterey Road and Bailey Avenue. Both the driver and passenger were detained.
 
The driver, later identified as 18-year-old Isael Velarde of Gilroy, was booked into Santa Clara County jail on charges of felony hit-and-run, DUI causing injury, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving without a license.
 
The victim’s name has been withheld pending family notification, but police confirmed that he was in his teens.
