Four People Injured after Unlicensed Driver Crashed into Oakland International Airport Terminal
OAKLAND, CA (March 27, 2018) – On Tuesday evening, a traffic collision injured a total of four pedestrians at the Oakland International Airport.
According to preliminary investigations, a red Mercedes-Benz SUV accelerated into the airport’s Terminal 1, jumped a curb, and struck pedestrians on the sidewalk at around 6:30 PM. Three people were injured in the crash, while one person was hit by a flying luggage.
The SUV driver was identified as 54-year-old Juan Pablo, a resident of Oakland. Officers stated that it seems like Pablo’s foot got stuck on the accelerator of the vehicle, causing the sudden charge into the terminal. It was also determined that he did not possess a driver’s license, resulting in his unfamiliarity with operating vehicles.
Two out of the four victims were transported to a hospital to treat minor to moderate injuries that they sustained. They are expected fully recover after treatment. Pablo received minor injuries from the collision.
People feared that it was a terrorist attack, but the Alameda County sheriff’s officials guaranteed that it was an accident. It did not follow the patterns of someone trying to intentionally harm people. Officials have arrested him for felony reckless driving causing injury, along with driving without a license.
The collision caused heavy traffic and delays in airport operations, but went back to normal at around 8 PM. No other information is available at the moment.
