Creston Man Dies in Cholame Y Head-On Crash
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA (August 7, 2019) – A man died following a head-on crash Wednesday evening at the Cholame Y intersection.
The crash happened around 10:00 p.m. where highways 46 and 41 connect. According to the CHP, a 2015 Honda Odyssey minivan, driven by 39-year-old Zi Tao Pan of Fresno, traveled eastbound on Highway 46 when it collided head-on with a westbound 1997 Ford F-150 pickup truck, driven by Federico Lopez Torres of Creston.
The two vehicles were heading towards the “Y” in the roadway. Pan attempted a left-hand turn onto the northbound Highway 41 in front of the oncoming Ford pickup truck. The pickup truck was unable to avoid the crash and both vehicles ended up on the shoulder of Highway 46.
The right front passenger in the Ford pickup, 48-year-old Juan Silva Casares of Creston, suffered blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.
Another passenger in the pickup truck, Francisco Silva, 45, of Creston was airlifted to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo. He reportedly suffered major injuries, including head, eye and ear lacerations.
Meanwhile, Pan, Torres and five other people were transported to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton.
Our deepest condolences and sympathies are with the family and friends of Juan Casares.
