34-Year-Old Salinas Man Fatally Struck by Amtrak Train near Abbott Street
SALINAS, CA (November 13, 2018) – A man was killed in a train collision on Sanborn Place, early Tuesday afternoon. The deceased victim was later identified by the Monterey County Coroner’s office as 34-year-old Josiah Deaton of Salinas.
According to the Salinas Police Department, the incident happened shortly before 3:30 PM near Abbott Street. The Amtrak Coast Starlight train was heading south when the conductor saw a man walking northbound on the tracks.
The conductor immediately sounded the horn to alert the pedestrian but saw no response from the pedestrian. Emergency brakes were used, but it could not stop in time and hit Deaton.
He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. None of the train’s 137 passengers and crew members sustained injuries in the collision.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fatal crash and to identify possible contributing factors. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the authorities as soon as possible. Additional information will be released once it becomes available.
