Man Trying to Retrieve Ladder Fatally Struck by Car on 80 Freeway at Highway 113

 
DIXON, CA (April 8, 2019) – A man was killed after being struck by a car Monday morning in Dixon, according to the CHP.
 
The fatal crash happened around 8:11 a.m. on eastbound 80 Freeway. First responders arrived near the Currey Road off-ramp soon after.
 
Authorities said the man was driving a white Chevrolet Silverado when a ladder fell off the back of his pickup truck. The driver pulled his vehicle to the right shoulder, reversed to the ladder and exited his vehicle. As he was trying to retrieve the ladder, he was struck by a gray Toyota Camry.
 
The victim was found in critical condition as a result of the impact. He was pronounced dead on scene, due to the extent of his injuries. He was later identified by the Solano County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office as Joseph Gingerich, 58, of Dixon.
 
The driver of the Camry, a 25-year-old Vacaville man, remained at the scene and coorperated with authorities. Furthermore, a juvenile was found in the pickup with Gingerich.
 
The North First Street was temporarily shut down and a Sig-Alert was also issued in the area. Traffic reportedly backed up to Dixon, but eventually reopened just before 11:00 a.m.
 
It is currently unknown if charges has been filed because liability yet to be determined. The incident remains under investigation.
