48-Year-Old Man Dies in Morning Crash on 5 Freeway at Clairemont Drive
BAY PARK, CA (January 6, 2019) – A man was killed in a car accident Sunday morning on 5 Freeway in Bay Park, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The man has been identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office as 48-year-old Joseph Vito Berardino.
Berardino was driving a red SUV northbound on 5 Freeway near Clairemont Drive when he lost control and struck the center divider around 5:50 a.m. He apparently went out of his vehicle when two other cars struck him, throwing him to the ground.
Paramedics responded and pronounced Berardino dead at the scene.
All northbound lanes of 5 Freeway at Clairemont Drive were closed until around 8:30 a.m.
Alcohol and/or drugs were not being ruled out as factors of the crash. Further investigation is underway.
