Husband, Wife and 3-Year-Old Son Fatally Struck by DUI Driver while Trick-or-Treating near Los Cerritos Park
LONG BEACH, CA (October 31, 2019) – A family of three was killed while trick-or-treating on Halloween night after being struck by a DUI driver.
The fatal crash happened just before 10:00 a.m., on Country Club Drive near Los Cerritos Park.
Video footage from the crash shows the family walking a stroller when a 2002 Toyota Sequoia jumped the curb at a high speed and struck them. Then, the SUV crashed through a drinking fountain and small mesh utility boxes.
Paramedics rushed all three victims to the hospital with severe injuries upon arrival.
The husband, 30-year-old Joseph Awaida, died at the hospital shortly after. Doctors tried to save the wife and child who were in critical condition.
Omar Awaida, the 3-year-old boy, died Friday night. Omar’s mother, Raihan Awaida, 32, was taken off life support and died Sunday, November 3.
In the aftermath of the crash, GoFundMe and LaunchGood pages were created to help pay for funeral expenses. By Monday afternoon, they had collectively raised more than $356,000.
The driver of the SUV, 20-year-old Carlo Navarro of Long Beach, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. He was later released after posting $100,000 bail.
With deepest sympathies, our law firm would like to send our thoughts of courage, strength, and support to the bereaved loved ones and friends of the Awaida family.
