Jose Ramos Identified as Man Killed in San Jose Auto Accident on 280 Freeway
SAN JOSE, CA (June 4, 2020) – Early Wednesday morning, a fatal pedestrian crash killed Jose Ramos, 63, on the interchange of Interstate 280 and Highway 87.
The authorities first received a report of the pedestrian crash on June 3 around 12:20 a.m. on the ramp from northbound 280 Freeway to southbound Highway 87.
Meanwhile, the CHP dispatch logs also revealed that the San Jose resident probably walked between the two lanes of the ramp.
After the crash, the police shut down southbound Highway 87, just north of West Alma Avenue until around 1:10 a.m.
Furthermore, the ramp from northbound 280 Freeway to southbound Highway 87 and the ramp from southbound 280 Freeway to northbound 87 remained unavailable until 2:45 a.m.
Because the driver who hit Mr. Ramos fled the scene, CHP is investigating his death as a felony hit-and-run, according to Officer Alicia Moreno.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family and friends of Jose Ramos.
The Rising Numbers of Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in the US
In 2017 there were 5,977 pedestrians killed in traffic crashes in the United States.
On average, a pedestrian was killed every 88 minutes in traffic crashes. That is more than 16 people a day, almost 115 people a week.
While car accidents are far more common than pedestrian accidents, there is still reason to be wary when traveling on foot.
“Pedestrian accidents do not occur as much as motor vehicle accidents. But the pedestrian accidents tend to include more serious injuries,” says Tyler Toomey, a practicing attorney at Sweet Lawyers.
