Jose Lozano and Wife Killed, Angela Hays Arrested in DUI Crash on I-5
Carlsbad, CA (January 15, 2024) On Saturday morning, 28-year-old Angela Hays of Corona was arrested after a 3-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 that killed Jose Lozano and Luz Duran Rios.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal crash happened at about 3:49 a.m. on the southbound lanes of I-5 in Carlsbad north of Palomar Airport Road.
Officials say that Hays was driving a southbound gray Hyundai sedan that crashed into a Jeep Grand Cherokee, the impact of the collision caused the Jeep to overturn. Consequently, a white Nissan Altima then crashed into the overturned Jeep.
Reports say that a Jeep’s female passenger, later identified as Luz Duran Rios, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the man driving the Jeep, Jose Lozano, was rushed to a hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital. The couple was from Richmond, CA.
Meanwhile, the male driver of the Nissan, sustained major but non-life-threatening injuries, he was taken to a hospital as well.
Authorities say that Hays escaped injuries, but she was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence and was booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
CHP is investigating the fatal DUI collision.
