Angel Mata Arrested in Santa Maria Hit-and-Run Crash Injuring Jose Hernandez
Santa Maria, CA (July 01, 2021) – On Tuesday, 27-year-old Jose Hernandez of Santa Maria was injured while police arrested the 49-year-old Angel Mata of Santa Maria in a suspected DUI crash on Highway 101.
The accident took place shortly before 3 p.m. south of the Main Street onramp wherein a 2002 Chevy Silverado and 2002 Nissan Altima were involved.
Apparently, Hernandez and Mata were both southbound when the accident happened.
Mata was driving the Nissan at a high rate of speed in the left-hand lane and passed the Chevrolet, driven by Hernandez.
Mata passed Hernandez. He drifted across all three lanes to the right and drove onto the right shoulder.
Then, he made a hard turning movement to the left, went across the three lanes of the highway, and struck the center divider wall.
As a result, the Nissan’s front bumper was dislodged in the center lane into the path of the Chevrolet.
Meanwhile, the Nissan rested in the farthest right-hand lane.
Hernandez drifted into right-hand lane to avoid crashing the bumper. His vehicle hit the front end of the Nissan and his Chevrolet rolled-over.
Mata immediately fled the scene but was later located on Bradley Road.
Authorities arrested Mata on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and hit-and-run.
Both Hernandez and Mata incurred minor scrapes in the accident.
