1 Dead and 7 Arrested after Chase That Ends with Crash on Gaylord Avenue
LONG BEACH, CA (May 29, 2020) – Wednesday evening, Jose Hernandez died in a DUI crash on Gaylord Avenue, while police arrested the burglars responsible.
According to reports, the man was walking his dog when a car being chased by Long Beach police hit him.
Authorities reported the driver to be under the influence of drugs. Meanwhile, police arrested the six burglary suspects.
The incident started around 11:10 p.m. when officers responded to the 2100 block of Gaylord Avenue.
This followed a report of a burglary at a marijuana-related business, Long Beach Police Lt. Robert Woods revealed. Reports revealed that the suspects were cutting down marijuana plants.
When the officers arrived, they arrested three suspects. However, one suspect escaped in a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE. Then, the police began the chase, Woods said.
The Aftermath of the Long Beach Police Chase
After five minutes, a 32-year-old Jose Hernandez and his dog sustained fatal injuries after being hit by the suspect’s vehicle. Hernandez legally crossed a street at Magnolia Avenue and Sixth Street when the crash happened. The authorities declared him dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, the officers identified the driver as 26-year-old Jyvante West of Richmond.They arrested him on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, hit-and-run resulting in death, driving under the influence of drugs causing injury, evading a police officer, commercial burglary, and conspiracy to commit a crime.
Moreover, the police also searched the marijuana business and take into custody three other suspects. Authorities identified the six burglars as: 43-year-old Rohnell Robinson of Richmond; 34-year-old Samuel Young of Vallejo; 26-year-old Michael Bracy of Hercules; 23-year-old Alfred Stevens of Pittsburg; 38-year-old Deantee James of Richmond; and 36-year-old Jamel Brown of Vallejo.
The authorities set their bail for $10,000. Meanwhile, West’s bail was set on $100,000.
The police will present the cases to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.
