34-Year-Old Tacoma Man Struck by Toyota Corolla on Highway 509 near Alexander Avenue
TACOMA, WA (September 17, 2018) – On Monday night, a man was killed in a pedestrian collision on the southbound Highway 509. The deceased victim was later identified as 34-year-old Jose Gomez of Tacoma.
Troopers and medics arrived at the scene at around 10:15 PM after receiving reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle, just south of Alexander Avenue. Gomez was walking in the middle of the freeway when he was struck by a Toyota Corolla. He sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers.
The driver of the Toyota, a 26-year-old Tacoma man, stopped the vehicle and remained at the scene until officials arrived. State Patrol troopers confirmed that he was not impaired at the time of the collision.
Southbound lanes of the highway were shut down to public traffic for about two hours during the investigation. No additional information has been released to the public at this time.
