San Jose Man Dead, Jose Cruz Jr and Passenger Injured in DUI Highway 101 Crash in Nipomo
Nipomo, CA (March 29, 2021) – On Saturday, 44-year-old Jose Cruz Jr of San Jose and a female passenger were injured in a fatal DUI crash on Highway 101.
The deadly wrong-way accident took place at around 11:10 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway.
A Chevrolet Tahoe driver, driven by 24-year-old Ernesto Herrera of Santa Maria, under the influence of intoxicants, entered the highway at West Tefft Street going south in the northbound lanes.
Herrera’s truck crashed with Cruz’s northbound Honda CR-V.
The Honda CR-V flipped over and landed on its roof in the median of the southbound lanes.
Moreover, an occupant in the Honda CR-V was thrown onto the median of the northbound lanes of Highway 101.
Right away, rescuers took the ejected person to Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria, but he later died of his injuries.
Furthermore, Cruz Junior and a female passenger in his vehicle, also of San Jose, sustained major injuries. Rescuers took them both to Marian Hospital.
Meanwhile, Herrera sustained minor injuries from the crash. He immediately fled the scene on foot.
A CHP helicopter and ground units located him shortly after.
Police arrested and booked him into San Luis Obispo County jail on suspicion of felony DUI that caused bodily injury, DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, fatal hit-and-run, and grand theft, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office. His bond was set at $100,000.
