Late Evening Fiery Crash on Santa Fe Road in Escalon Kills Driver
ESCALON, CA (September 3, 2019) – A driver was killed following a fiery crash late Tuesday evening on Santa Fe Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 11:20 p.m. south of River Road.
According to authorities, a Mini Cooper was traveling southbound when for unknown reasons, it drifted west off of the roadway and hit a raised asphalt curb. The car then overturned multiple times as it traveled down an embankment.
As a result, the driver, 46-year-old Jose Calderon of Riverbank, was ejected and landed in close proximity to the car. He died at the scene.
Subsequently, the Mini Cooper caught fire and quickly became fully engulfed, spreading to the dry grass around it and enveloping Calderon, according to the CHP.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash, which remains under investigation.
No words can mend the broken hearts and sorrow felt during this delicate moment. Our deepest condolences and sympathies are with the family and friends of Jose Calderon.
