SANTA ANA, CA (February 20, 2019) – Early Sunday morning, four victims were fatally injured in a DUI crash on 4th Street.
According to the police, the fatal collision was caused by an impaired driver who was later arrested on felony DUI and four counts of murder.
The people who were killed in the crash have been identified as 31-year-old Jose Alberto Avila-Rosas, of Santa Ana, who was driving the vehicle that was struck; and passengers 23-year-old Ziomara Zaragoza, of Garden Grove; 23-year-old Antonio Alonso Santibanez, of Orange; and 34-year-old Prisma Yuliana Montoya, of Santa Ana.
The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. near 4th Street and Tustin Avenue, Santa Ana police stated.
A southbound white Chevrolet Silverado pickup was traveling on Tustin when a westbound black Jeep ran a red light, and the vehicles collided. This caused both vehicles to roll over multiple times, resulting in one of them bursting into flames.
An off-duty firefighter happened to be in the vicinity during the crash, and was able to help put out the fire. In addition, his wife who is a nurse was able to help render aid on scene.
Peter Aguilar, the firefighter with the West Covina department, stated he and his wife were returning from a coworker’s birthday party when they came across the wreckage of the collision. They got out of their Uber and began helping.
Due to the impact of the crash, the driver of the Chevy and three passengers succumbed to their injuries, and were pronounced dead. The driver of the Jeep was brought to a nearby hospital, initially in critical condition. The current status of his condition is unknown at this time.
Authorities say the driver of the Jeep, identified as 28-year-old Vincent Michael Calvo, of Buena Park, appeared to be intoxicated at the scene. After being medically cleared from the hospital, he was arrested with bail set at $4 million. Furthermore, police reported that a surveillance video shows the Jeep blowing through the red light and crashing into the truck.
